Looking for the source, the researchers realized that they originated from consumer products such as facial scrubs and toothpaste, where the microbeads where added to act as gentle exfoliant or abrasive. In one tube of Johnson & Johnson facial scrub Clean & Clear, there was about a tablespoon of them, which amounted to about 330,000 microbeads. And because they float, water treatment plants have difficulty removing them from waste water....
